Artist's Description
Moon Shot! Acrylic on 24x36 canvas. A few years ago, I took my son Andrew and his Cub Scout pack to the Space Center in Huntsville, AL. One of the original Saturn V rockets was in the yard. Until you stand beneath this rocket, you cannot imagine the size and power this can generate. I was hooked! Later we built a telescope and spent many hours staring at the craters on the moon. Recently, my friend, and fellow artist, Andrew Hollimon encouraged me to paint a picture including a moon. I found the full moon image from NASA and the vision quickly came together. This painting reveals the original Apollo Saturn V rocket leaving Cape Canaveral along with the image and shadow of the International Space Station reflected in the Sea of Serenity, the landing site for Apollo 17.
About Mike Jenkins
Mike Jenkins has been waterlogged since the summer he was born. Mike Jenkins' Granddad was a sailor. His Dad was a charter boat captain. This is why Mike Jenkins paints boats, beaches, birds, beasts and the occasional portrait. Most of Mike's inspiration for painting comes from God and the sea. Mike started drawing and painting in the early 1970s. Mike's mentor was Sidney E King who painted nearly 200 murals for the National Park Service and the largest Mural painted in the USA. Later Mike studied with Kristopher Meadows, one of the most inspiring portrait painters in the southeast and an honors graduate of the Savannah College of Arts and Design.
